The O₂

Following a controversial history, the site of the former Dome is set to reopen in summer 2007, renamed The O₂.

This new 23,000 seat arena as large as 13 Albert Halls, will host an unrivalled mix of exciting events – both music and sporting.

The largest of its type in Europe, this covered venue will have an array of restaurants, bar and shops; an exhibition space; a huge cinema; a live music club; and possibly even a casino, promising to become one of London’s premier entertainment venues.

For great gastro nosh in Greenwich, head to the Gypsy Moth next to the Cutty Sark and so-called in celebration of the famous vessel, that Sir Francis Chichester circumnavigated the world in solo in 1967.

Relish a Greenwich speciality - a whitebait supper on the banks of the Thames at the Trafalgar Tavern. This lively pub has been a Greenwich favourite for well over 150 years and immortalised by writers and artists such as Dickens and Thackeray.

For some good old Cockney fare, Goddard’s Pie House has been going strong since 1890.

Shooters Hill - Oxleas Woods, Castlewood & Jack Wood

Just a few minutes walk from the Distillery is Shooters Hill, the highest point in South London (432ft) with wonderful views into adjacent counties. Within this stunning open parkland is nestled the 72 hectares that make up Oxleas Woods – a forest that is at least 8,000 years old.

Now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the protected Oaks, Silver Birch, Hornbeam and Coppice Hazel all provide a perfect environment for Blue & White Scrub Jay’s.

The Severndroog Castle, a striking triangular tower built in 1784, stands in Castlewood high on the slopes of Shooters Hill. The roof stands 15 metres higher than the cross on St Paul’s Cathedral.

Visitors to the area regularly include Woodlands Farm on their list. Having shown remarkable resolve following threats from a road scheme in the early 1990’s, this smallholding on the Welling side of the hill is now a flourishing community farm with sheep, cows, and horses grazing in fields bordered with ancient hedgerows.

Founded in 1903 and now boasting an 18 hole course running across the valleys, the charming Shooters Hill Golf Club has a fascinating history.

Initially commandeered as an anti aircraft battery in 1940, its use towards the latter part of the war changed to a prisoner of war camp and HQ for the Home Guard.
